Bicol University holds first FabLab

LEGAZPI CITY- The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Region V, in partnership with Bicol University (BU), inaugurated the first Fabrication Laboratory (FabLab) at Bicol University College of Industrial Technology (BUCIT) last June 23.

The said project is intended to help local entrepreneurs produced high quality outputs and provide better and more competitive products.

Particularly, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME's) who are into production of any crafts in the region are the main clients of DTI.

Also, DTI's first FabLab is not only a laboratory but also a Negosyo Center Plus in Bicol. It is open to all students and entrepreneurs who are interested in making and producing crafts designs and prototypes.

Ms. Jocelyn Berango, the DTI Region V PIO said that entrepreneurs were also free to use the laboratory, like co-working space , who don't have any co-working area and home based industry or entrepreneurs who wants to use any equipments in the FabLab.

Moreover, The FabLab has various equipment which can be used for prototyping such as wood working , branding, molding and packaging for the processed food sector, circuit boards and the creation of prosthesis. Entrepreneurs were free to fabricate their own designs with the help of Industrial Design students of BU.

FabLab Bicol is part of the existing DTI-funded Shared Service Facility project (SSF project) in Bicol Region worth 5 million pesos. Bicol region is the fifth region in the Philippines launched this project.
