With its aim to inform the youth of their role in consumerism, the Department of Trade and Industry in cooperation with Team Albay Youth Organization (TAYO) conducted ConsYouthMers at Arcilla Hall, Bicol University College of Social Science and Philosophy (BUCSSP)

The said program is anchored with the theme “Consumer Protection: A shared responsibility.’’

The one day activity is composed of 5 stations that will be played by 4 teams and will be accompanied by a lecture given by the DTI members afterwards.

The following stations include: the Graffiti Station which tackles the Consumer Rights, the Complaint Board Station that discusses the Right to Complain, and the Consumerism word puzzle quiz with a lecture discussing 5 Consumer Responsibilities.

“Since we are discussing about Consumerism and consumer rights and responsibilities, I believe that the youth are going to learn and through these activities, will be a great help for them to become an informed consumers,” says Ms. Jo Aguilar, Division Chief of DTI V.

Moreover, the activity has become an avenue to acquire new knowledge to the participants,

“Yes, marami ‘cause it’s about the rights ko, mas na-open pa ako sa mga ideas and pwede ko pa ma share sa iba,” says Feby Esquillo, a BS Economic Student from Bicol University College of Business Economics and Management.

“Nabuksan yung isipan ko po tungkol po sa iba’t ibang aspects po ng consumerism kasi akala ko po dati consumerism is just all about purchasing pero dito po natutunan po naming magreklamo po, mag formal complaint po kapag po may defect and product” said by Riza Garcia, BS Economic Student from BUCBEM.

However, some participants did not stay throughout the whole program due to some conflicts on the schedules of BU Week.

Jiff Lamadrid, Youth Bureau Head on Livelihood and employment further explained about the conflict, "yung partner agency talaga namin is BU CSSP. Medyo nagkaroon lang ng conflict with our participants because of the schedule which is basicaly last week lang namin nalaman. Hindi na rin namin pwedeng i-move because the original schedule is September 12 which is after a week. Parang dun lang rin nalaman na nag announce na holiday yun. Everything has already been set sana for that particular event pero holiday, walang pupunta”

Furthermore, the next ConsYouthMers will be held on October 3 at Ligao.

“We’re going to prepare for that, medyo bongga syempre because of what happened here” Lamadrid expressed.

Finally, Division Chief Aguilar left the participants of the ConsYouthmers with a message, “Sana whatever they have learned today should be shared with their families with their friends and for other people in their school. Sana hindi niya iwanan sa four corners of the hall. And then sana they should be active in making pakialam about their rights as consumers.”
